Start by right-clicking on the file
This will bring up a menu, choose properties
On the next screen that come up, choose "General"
Then, at the "Opens with" section, click the "Change button"
On the next screen, you can choose the app you want. If the app is not displayed, you will need to select "More apps"
and then "Look for another app on this PC
You will then need to locate the application on your hard drive. Excel 2016, for example, is located at c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16
Select the application and click the "Open" button
This will return you to the properties window where you can click "OK" to save your changes. The file should now open with the selected application when you double-click it.
