Fixing Black Bars on Ultrawide Monitor (Dell XPS / Intel GPU)

Modified on Mon, 30 Jun at 2:01 PM

Issue: External ultrawide monitor (e.g. LG 38”) shows black bars top and bottom despite using native resolution (3840×1600).

Symptoms

  • Resolution is set correctly to 3840 × 1600

  • Monitor works fine with other laptops

  • Intel GPU is active (typical on Dell XPS models)

  • Monitor shows black bars top/bottom, not sides

?️ Fix Steps

  1. Open Display Settings
Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings

  2. Select the external monitor

  3. Change Refresh Rate from 60 Hz to 59.94 Hz or 59.99 Hz

  4. Click Apply
